Music Tuition

We are able to arrange instrumental tuition at Looe Community Academy on a multitude of different instruments, taught in many different ways and in a variety of styles!

Learning to play an instrument is an enriching experience for students, providing opportunities to play in groups, bands and a range of ensembles, as well as developing many other valuable qualities such as self-discipline, concentration, self-confidence and creativity. Music lessons can also increase performance in other areas, particularly languages, mathematics, reading and memory recall.

Who are the tutors?

Tom Howard Josh Hawke Bianca Phillips

Tom has been working in and around the Brass world for nearly 20 years.

He has a wealth of experience in multiple different disciplines, such as Jazz, Classical and modern.

Tom is currently the principal tenor horn for St Austell Town Band, and has gained multiple awards in this position. He is also a competent Musical Director, conducting many different ensembles, including; St Breward Silver Band, Bethel Choir, Loveney Male Voice Choir and the Cornwall Youth Brass Band.

Tom now works with multiple different schools in and around North Cornwall, providing brass tuition across the South West.

Josh, the gear and tech-obsessed guitar teacher has been playing guitar for 18 years. Josh achieved his Grade 8 with London College of Music at the age of 16. He has been a qualified guitar teacher since the age of 18 and achieved a BA Music degree with Honours. He also completed his Graduate Teaching Programme (GTP) as a qualified teacher.

Josh has toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, picking up record contracts along the way. Josh teaches everything from Acoustic, Metal, Rock and Jazz Guitar. Josh gives students a wide and dynamic guitar experience setting them up to be the next Hendrix if they want to!

Every student is taught on an individual basis and loves seeing the next generation of music talent come together to perform!

Bianca studied voice with Linda Hirst and Alistair Young at Trinity College of Music, London and also with Mary Beth Smith at the University of South West Texas, USA, before graduating with a BMus 1st Class Honours degree in 1999. She then completed a PGCE in 2003.

Bianca is a full-time peripatetic voice and instrumental teacher. She is also a principal with the Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship and a frequent soloist with various choral societies and choirs throughout the South West of England. Roles include Rose Maybud (Ruddigore); Mabel (The Pirates of Penzance); Elsie (The Yeomen of the Guard); Micaela (Carmen); Phyllis (Iolanthe); Josephine (HMS Pinafore); the plaintiff, Angelina (Trial by Jury); Kim (Bye Bye Birdie) and Isabelle in the Royal Philharmonic award-winning opera 'One Day, Two Dawns’. Bianca is a proud mum to her 16 year old twin sons, 5 year old son and 4 year old daughter.

Lessons take place during the school day and lasts 20 minutes. These lessons are individual and are tailored completely to each individual student. The instrumental lessons are on a rolling timetable to ensure that students do not miss parts of the same lesson continually.

Subsidy Codes

Code ‘A’ - Will receive £5 towards the cost of each individual lesson.

  • Currently, Eligible for Free School Meals.
  • Currently, in care.
  • One or more parents/carers in the household are currently serving in the British Armed Forces.

Code ‘B’ - Will receive £2.50 towards the cost of each individual lesson.

  • Parent/carer in the child’s household or child learning is in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (Personal Independence Payment).

Code ‘C’ - Will receive £8.50 towards the cost of each individual lesson.

  • Students with statements of Special Educational Needs can receive this subsidy

 

* Please Note that subsidies apply to only one instrument per child.

* Evidence of entitlement to subsidy must be supplied when returning the form to qualify.
