Space Science Fayre

On Monday our Y7 presented their projects at the first LCA Space Science Fayre (with plans for this to be an annual event).
This project came at the end of our space unit and allowed the students to follow their curiosity and investigate a space topic of their choosing. Our judges were Mr Thorpe and our special guest judge Mike Grocott who is an ex-space scientist who has worked for NASA. The quality of the work and the enthusiasm the Y7 had was fantastic. The top three projects for creativity and the top three projects for scientific merit were awarded. We learnt about everything from unusual space phenomena such as space snakes, what would we need to live on Mars and multiverse theory.
The winners were:
Scientific merit:
1st place: Emily and Miyah’s project on gamma ray bursts
2nd place: Ruby, Ayla and two other student's project on black holes
3rd place: Eryn and Ileana’s history of the moon landings project
Creativity:
1st place: Zachary and Jack’s solar system model
2nd place: Zara and Emma’s “Could a cockatoo go to Pluto?!”
3rd place: Zach and George’s 3-D printed solar system on a washing line
Earlier in the day, Mike Grocott also kindly spoke to our Y10 T20 and triple science cohort about astrophysics and space careers.
