Careers Curriculum Intent Statement
At Looe Community Academy, our Careers curriculum is designed to prepare every learner for success in an ever-changing world of work. We believe that careers education is not an add-on but a core entitlement, woven through every subject and every year. Our aim is to develop assessment-capable, self-aware, socially and culturally agile individuals who can articulate themselves confidently and academically in any context.
From the moment students join us in Year 7, careers learning begins. Through curriculum-linked projects, local, national, and international visits, and employer engagement, students explore the breadth of opportunities available to them. Each subject is explicitly connected to industry sectors, helping learners understand how knowledge and skills translate into real-world careers. This approach ensures that students see purpose in their learning and aspire ambitiously.
Our curriculum prioritises oracy and communication, recognising that the ability to speak persuasively and confidently is a game-changer. Dedicated oracy lessons, integrated with English and across subjects, develop interview techniques, presentation skills, and the art of debate—empowering students to become positive disruptors and leaders of change.
We aim to provide high challenge with low threat, creating a culture where students feel safe to explore, question, and take risks. Through structured encounters with employers, alumni, and higher education, learners gain insight into pathways and expectations. Work experience in Year 10, combined with ongoing careers guidance, ensures that every student is equipped to make informed decisions about post-16 and beyond.
Our Careers curriculum is underpinned by the latest research and national frameworks, including the Gatsby Benchmarks, and is designed to:
- Build knowledge of the labour market, emerging industries, and global trends.
- Develop transferable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and digital literacy.
- Foster resilience and adaptability, preparing students for multiple careers in a dynamic economy.
- Promote social mobility and equality of opportunity, ensuring every learner can access high-quality advice and experiences.
Ultimately, our intent is to create future-ready citizens—students who are confident, articulate, and ambitious, able to navigate complex social and cultural landscapes and thrive in education, employment, and life.
